Advice to School Girls by Minnie, No. 3 1859 "Minnie", apparently Marion H. Ray, penned five paragraphs of "Advice":  She pities the refined city girls with the elegant dresses and silk aprons trimmed with wide flounces and sweet little pockets. "Now girls I advise you to take a few lessons of your kind mothers upon the cook stove and the sink, and learn the art of plain embroidery that you may help your mothers make your father's and brothers clothes." . 2 pp. 19 x 23 cm. Care and Feeding of Children, The; by L. Emmett Holt, M.D., LL.D., Professor of Diseases of Children at Columbia University, Sixth Edition, Revised and Enlarged. 1913 New York, NY: D. Appleton & Co. Author's aim is not to alarm the mother by acquainting her with all the possible diseases and accidents which may befall her child, but to open her eyes to matters which are direct and chief concern. Care of children: bathing, genital organs, eyes, mouth; cover chest with soft flannel band. Napkins (diapers) which have only been wet may be used for a second time without washing, unless there is chafing. Airing the nursery. When to take a baby out for an airing.  Infant feeding. Mothers who have had tuberculosis should not nurse their babies. Weaning children from the breast; from the bottle. Modification of cow's milk.  Common mistakes in milk modification. Kissing infants  -- tuberculosis, diphtheria, syphilis and many other grave diseases may be communicated in this way.  Colic, Earache. Croup. Convulsions. Rubella. Scarlet fever. Chicken-pox. Interesting and very thought-provoking book, uses a sprightly, sometimes humorous dialogue (31 pp.) between man and woman to introduce topic. Discusses "Characters of Intellect" like Portia, Isabella, Beatrice and Rosalind, "Characters of Passion and Imagination" like Juliet, Helena, Perdita, Ophelia and Miranda; "Characters of the Affections" like Hermione, Desdemona and Imogen; and "Historical Characters" like Cleopatra, Octavia, Blanche of Castile, Katerine of Arragon and Lady Macbeth.. Blue cloth on board, front outer hinge torn so that spine flaps open. Book warped, pages foxed, some loose in binding. Reading copy. (1617) $28.00. Women's.
Clothing, An Introductory College Course by Latzke, Alpha; Quinlan, Beth ©1935 Chicago, IL: J.B. Lippincott  Co. 418 pp. 14 x 21 cm. Two professors in the Department of Clothing and Textiles at Kansas State College produced this textbook.  Book was owned by Jean Gates Tyler, who made a few light pencil notations in text, and on back free endpaper noted "Saturday of next week -- the dresses are due." She also makes list of material and costs, which total $1.85. Light blue cloth on board with gilt lettering, light pencil notes in about two places, and in back of book. Very good. (3486) $16.00. Daughters of America; or,  Women of the Century, Illustrated  by Hanaford, Phebe A. ca. 1883 Augusta, ME: True and Company. Marvelous copy of a grand celebration of and for women; Dedicated to the women of future centuries of the USA. Author Phebe Ann Coffin Hanaford (b. 1829— d. 1921) was a lifelong pioneer of feminism, abolition and women's suffrage.  Frontispiece steel engraving of Phebe Hanaford. Stories and illustrations of famous women include Hannah Duston, Martha Washington, Lucretia Mott, Phoebe Cary, Alice Cary, Ida Lewis, Miss Frances E. Willard, Mrs. Sarah K. Bolton, Mrs. R.B. Hayes, Mrs. Dr. McCabe, Mrs. Mary T. Burt, Elizabeth Comstock, Mother Taylor, Emily Huntington Miller, Mrs. Mary C. Johnson. Chapters devoted to  women leaders in many fields; women during the Civil War, wives of Presidents, literary women, women poets, women scientists, women reformers, women preachers (including Mrs. Hanaford), women missionaries, more. 730 pp. 14 x 22 cm. Elegant copy  with fresh decorated cover in muted gold, with image of Martha Washington, slight edge wear on heel and toe of spine. Gilt-edged pages, quite bright and clean. Very faint foxing on frontispiece. Handwritten inscription from "Aunt Fannie" to Elva on front free endpaper, dated 1893.  Very good. (1674)  $66.00. Women's/Biography

Delineator, The; A Journal of Fashion, Culture and Fine Arts, March, 1896, Vol.  XLVII No. 3 New York, NY: Butterick Publishing Co. Excellent collection of women's, girls' and children's styles for 1896; little boys in skirts; many good ads. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound adv.:

"Oh, I am so nervous! No one ever suffered as I do! There isn't a well inch in my whole body! I honestly think my lungs are diseased, my chest pains me so; but I've no cough. I'm so weak at my stomach and have indigestion horribly. Then I have palpitation and my heart hurts me. How I am losing flesh! and this headache nearly kills me; and the backache! --why I had hysterics yesterday!... there are the pains in my groin and things. I can't sleep, walk or sit. Delineator, The; A Journal of Fashion, Culture and Fine Arts, August, 1896, Vol.  XLVIII No. 2 1896 Issue includes two full-page color plates showing women in (1) elegant, beribboned dresses-- Afternoon Toilette, basque-waist and skirt, pattern cost is 1 s. 3d. or 30 cents. Made of figured organdy over blue silk with lace edging and glacé taffeta ribbon. Also Ladies' Calling costume, pattern costs 1 s. 8d. or 40 cents.  This is an arrangement of sheer linen batiste in the natural linen hue over changeable violet silk, and (2) Fashionable millinery. Hats include a soft crown of moss-green velvet, a panama straw hat, a toque which is fancy straw braid with two full-blown roses and Dresden ribbon. Also, Ladies' promenade hat--changeable violet Malines with pink rose-buds. Also ladies' lace hat, wire frame covered with tulle and lace and ribbon with bunch of Marguerites and smaller bunch of carnations.  Issue includes advertisement for "Bicycle Fashions" for women; braided wire for bustles, hip-bustles, bust forms, sleeve distenders, Cuticura soap for lovely skin; Fibre Chamois; Ed. Pinaud Parfumerie, Pears' Soap, etc.  118 + xxii 20 x 27 cm. Paper periodical, front cover nearly detached, color plates very good. Overall good. (6954) $39.00. Women's/Fashions

Very comprehensive, thoughtful study of the writing about women and their lives in the ante-bellum period (1830-1860) of America. 170 pp. 14 x 22 cm. Fairest Girlhood by Margaret E. Sangster with drawings by Griselda Marshall McClure 1906 Chicago, IL: Fleming H. Revell Co. Margaret Elizabeth Munson Sangster (1838-1912) was a deeply religious woman who distinguished herself as an author, writer, but best known for her editorial work.  This book, in her foreword, is intended for all girls, and may well provide interesting and useful advice for today's young 21st century girls. General Electric Electric Sink--Advertising brochure for GE Dishwasher and Disposall ca. 1938 General Electric Co. Interesting advertising piece for pre-World War II housewives. Cover shows small girl with bonnet saying "Gee, Mummy, isn't it wonderful not having to wash dishes anymore.." while "Mummy" looks inside a dishwasher, and daddy, holding his fedora, looks on approvingly.  Inside, "Mrs. America Quits Two More Jobs!" and "And where she [Mrs. America] has a maid" -- there is photo of an African-American woman: -- "I'se sure got a good job now!"  Electric Sink washes the dishes, disposes of food wastes electrically! 24 pp. 21.5 x 28 cm. Home Life Made Beautiful in Story, Song, Sketch and Picture, written, edited and compiled by Margaret E. Sangster 1897 New York, NY: The Christian Herald.  Margaret Munson Sangster (1838-1912) was an accomplished poet, writer and a very religious woman.  She is best known for her editorial work, primarily for Harper's Bazaar; this book is another example of her excellent work.  This book is richly illustrated, and filled with stories, with many morality lessons, patriotic and religious works, including much poetry, some songs-- all uplifting and positive. 448 pp. 16 x 23 cm. Illustrated blue cloth on board with gilt lettering, 2 cm closed tear in bottom of frontispiece page, title page partially separated. Slight rubbing of heel and toe of spine, else a very attractive copy.  Good. (1678) $34.00. Women's

Housewife, The, November 1912; The Housewife makes the home and the home makes the Nation.  1912 New York, NY: The A.D. Porter Co., Publishers. Cover picture shows two children rolling a huge pumpkin with "Thanksgiving" carved in it. "Going to the Candy Store with Johnny" by Barbara Allen, provides guidance on candies, including adulteration with varnish, shellac, starch, glucose, talc powder, cheap vaseline in fondant, taffy died with coal-tar. Federal Bureau of Chemistry is warning manufacturers against shellacking chocolates to make them look fresh.   "Little Experiences of Married Life, When Love is All" by Helen Peck.  "Love Cottage" by Anne Shannon Monroe. "Cold Storage Turkey" by William Hamilton Osborne.  "A Thanksgiving Cookery Party" by Mary Dawson. Large, full-page color ad for Cream of Wheat shows small boy with straw hat slung on shoulders, with sweat coming from face as he carries basket of groceries including Cream of Wheat. Caption: "A Labor of Love!" Ad for Ivory Soap; Ad for Campbell's Soup--21 kinds, 10¢ a can. 32 pp. 28 x 40 cm. Paper periodical, several small (2 cm.) closed tears on cover edges, good. Ladies' Repository for 1850, The, Rev. B.F. Tefft, D.D., Editor 1850 Cincinnati, OH: L. Swormstedt & J.H. Power.  Splendid collection of elegant engravings, poetry, music, religious thoughts, travel, all manner of literature, book reviews, commentary, attacks on "corrupting literature."  Impressive array of reading for educated women: Lead article for February discusses three books on The Jesuits, gives a colorful description and discussion, but ends with a stern message against the "Romish denomination."  An Incident of the Hungarian War. Adulation of Kossuth. "Tracks of a Traveler" for September relates journey from Canada to Syracuse to Albany and eventually to Martha's Vineyard and Boston, MA. In Boston, editor attends wild meeting of the "radical, abolition, non-resistant, woman's rights, anti-Church, no-government, general-reform, out-and-out, come-out, Garrisonian Society of Fanatics. Never since the flood, has there been such a congregation of lunatics, as were assembled."  Report from Germany on new strides in women's equality. 412 pp. 16 x 25 cm.
