Cornick's Patent Cultivator; Government gunboats being built at Pittsburgh, PA; Iron-clad ships vs. Batteries--discussion of weight of armor vs. speed and coal-carrying capacity. The Monitor. New marine engine construction to economize fuel in iron-plated ships. Much civil-war related discussion. Discussion on bayonet charges; At Portsmouth Navy yard they are painting warships grey vs. black. Surprising effect of the present war is unusual prosperity of the cotton manufacture: large additions being made to the old Merrimac at Lowell, MA; Manchang mill at Northbridge, MA has just received an addition; so is the Hamlet Co. of Woonsocket, RI. War Department inquiry through Scientific American on naval construction--intelligence gathering in the newspaper. British report on penetration of gun projectiles used against ironclad ships. Discussion on guncotton.  Interesting experiment with monster 15-inch gun at Washington Navy Yard; also a huge gun, weighing “nearly 19 tuns” is being tested aboard the gunboat Passaic, in the Hudson River.  16 pp. 25 x 34 cm. Front-page photo essay: "How Linoleums and Oilcloths are Made" shows high-speed printing machine which prints color designs on floor oilcloths and printed linoleums. Navy to build "Octopus" type of Submarine. Congress has authorized $3,000,000 to purchase boats which will be made by Electric Boat Company of New York. Contract awarded for two "Dreadnoughts"--two 20,000 ton battleships. New warships will each carry ten 12-inch guns. Experience of the Russo-Japanese war proved that it is better to limit number of guns and provide a hull that won't be riddled with high-explosive shells and sent to the bottom before the engagement has fairly begun. Gasoline motor cars adopted for Branch Line service on the Union Pacific Railroad. "The Riddle of Mars"  illustration shows map of Mars and its canals by Prof. Percival Lowell.
