Paul, son of one of Napoleon's soldiers and a Wesleyan convert, was a preacher and poet; he was only 23 when he died. He left religious poems which are printed in this "Notice." Official Railroad Guide and Temperance Advocate, Vol. I., No. 26, April 21, 1877,
You can just see her now-- a stylish woman, nicely dressed, carrying a basket of these newspapers aboard the S.S. Wyanoke, or one of the other steamships that called in Richmond each day. And when she wasn't delivering papers, she was writing, turning out serialized fiction, poetry-- everything and anything to fight the evils of drink. This copy of The Official Railroad Guide has the words "Compliments of Mittie" written in the title block of the paper, and you sense that this woman was everywhere fighting for her cause. Mittie Point Davis seems to write nearly everything in the paper, for distribution at train stations and steamship berths in Richmond. In the last part of a serial "The Cardinal Bow" she writes about a "cold-water wedding" with lemonade as the main refreshment. The message is: "Don't Drink!" throughout. The issue contains excellent train, steamship and hotel information and ads. 4 pp. 31 x 45 cm. Paper periodical, small closed tears at centerfold. Good. (3546) $35.00. History/Temperance.

Parochial School, The; A Curse to the Church, A Menace to the Nation--An exposé; an appalling account of priestly graft, immorality and sacrilege Third Edition by Crowley, Rev. Jeremiah J.1905 Chicago, IL: Rev. Jeremiah J. Crowley. This is an explosive book by an Irish-born American Catholic priest, published in 1905. He cries out against widespread graft and corruption in the American Roman Catholic Church. The Parochial School, he claims, is established with the aim of destroying the American public school. Included in preface is copy of letter sent to Pope Pius X. This book is loaded with historical accusations against the graft, corruption, immorality and sacrilege of priests, bishops and popes, which has caused some 30 million Catholics to leave the Church, he claims. This century-old book is startlingly similar to the sensational outcry of 2000 and 2001 against priestly abuse of children and the Catholic church's efforts to cover it up.
