Text Box: Boston Sunday Post, Sunday Magazine, November 14, 1915 Boston, MA: The Boston Post. Cover painting shows boy in turtleneck sweater with football in right hand, using his left hand to amplify his voice as he shouts. By Cushman Parker.  "You Should be Proud of this Man" by Burton J. Hendrick. Story of Dr. Richard P. Strong, who has, in the midst of war, delivered Servia from the typhus. For most of past 15 years he has been conducting expeditions to fight disease; a modern knight-errant whose weapons are the test-tube and the hypodermic needle. He has fought small-pox in the Philippines, pneumonic plague in Manchuria, and the "black death" in China.  Centerfold features photos of Love Making in Motion Pictures now (1915) and in earlier years on the stage. Photos of Maude Adams and Robert Edeson in "Little Minister". Photo of Sarah Bernhardt, 31 years ago, indulging in then-risky behavior of placing her hand on a man's shoulder. Also photo of Nat Goodwin and Maxine Elliott. Boston Weekly Messenger and Massachusetts Journal, Thursday, March 28, 1833, Vol. XII No. 42 Boston, MA: Boston Weekly Messenger. National Republican convention was held in Salem, MA to nominate a candidate for Representative in Congress--Joseph S. Cabot, Esq. Was nominated. A lady was crossing Brattle street near the square was struck by the Marblehead stage; both wheels passed over her right leg and broke it in a shocking manner. 4 pp. 43 x 62 cm. Boston Weekly Messenger, Wednesday Evening, September 1, 1841, Vol. XXXI No. 10. Boston, MA: Nathan Hale. New Bank Bill passed by U.S. House of Representatives; President Tyler has declared he will veto it; Riot in Washington in reaction to veto message. In campaign for President of Texas, Burnet leads Sam Houston; The Houston Telegraph says Houston's moral character is so outrageously bad it is compelled to go against him. Edward Everett of Massachusetts has been rejected by the Senate as ambassador to England on the grounds that he is an abolitionist. 4 pp. 52 x 68 cm. Dartmouth, The, April 1874; published by the students of Dartmouth College and edited by the senior class 1874 Hanover, NH: Dartmouth College. Publication features literary genius of Dartmouth students. Hamilton as a Young Writer describes Alexander Hamilton as a revolutionary pamphleteer.  "A Proposition" by Franz Boyd is humorous piece that suggests boxing up 300 Chinamen and smuggling them through the Upernavik custom-house. "Mr. Webster in Court" relates story of celebrated divorce case (and others) with Webster as counsel, in 1848.  156 pp. 14 x 22 cm. (6502) $32.00. Printed Matter/Educational 
Edison Life, May-June 1932 Boston, MA: Edison Electric Illuminating Company. Frontispiece portrait of Charles Leavitt Edgar (1860-1932) who died this year on April 14. He was president of Edison for over 32 years. Photo of model kitchen and laundry at 45 Boylston St. has the very latest of labor-saving devices and beautiful appointments. This includes an electric sink of stainless metal and built-in dishwasher. Ventilating fans keep the air cool and clean at all times. Essex County Mercury and Weekly Salem Gazette, Salem, Mass., Wednesday morning, Sept. 17, 1890 vol. 51 no. 38. Salem, MA: Nath'l A. Horton & Son. The Colored Odd Fellows--story about parade off black Odd Fellows from all over Boston area, and friction between Boston and Cambridge units. Juniper Point Illumination --crowds bigger, illumination smaller. An Ipswich Cow named Eurotisama produced over 945 pounds of butter. Federal Old-Age Benefits Established by the Social Security Act, December 1936 Seidemann, Henry P., Director 1936 Washington, DC: The Social Security Board. The Social Security Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt in 1935. This booklet explains how much a worker must earn and contribute to receive a benefit at age 65.  For example, a worker who will be 30 years old in 1937 and whose wages will be $2000 each year after 1936 and until he is 65 years old will be entitled to a monthly retirement benefit at age 65 of $60.42. Booklet provides tables and lists regional offices of the Social Security Board, and states that have public assistance plans and unemployment compensation laws approved by the Social Security Board.	19 pp.	10 x 23 cm. Life, New York, November 6, 1902 New York, NY: Life. Lively magazine of tart opinions, satire and humor. Full page cartoon "When a Woman was Pope".  Lead editorial chides Methodist ministers who seek to get Professor Atwater of Wesleyan University fired because he stated that to a certain extent alcohol serves as food to the body.  Discussion of Labor question, now that miners have gone back to work-- what will happen to non-union miners? In U.S. Army nowadays soldiers are more or less a catch-all-- "it gathers in  young men whose brief experience of life has been disappointing to their friends."  Service in the Philippines has not been conducive to orderly living.  Cartoon by Bayard Jones, "No Love Lost". Mount Royal Hotel, Montreal, Canada Carte de Vins 1928 Montreal, Que.: Mount Royal Hotel	. The Hotel complies with the Alcoholic Liquor Act of the Province of Quebec--only beers and wines served. Particulars of Vintages: 1887 Port was fine, best since 1878; 1896 is a fine vintage; 1888 mediocre. Champagne, 1880 vintage is very good, lighter than 1874's. "A Message to Garcia" by Elbert Hubbard, reprinted by the courtesy of Mr. Hubbard from the March issue of "Philistine" of which he is editor. "In all this Cuban business there is one man who stands out on the horizon of my memory like Mars at perihelion."  "A Curious Instrument of Old Japan" by Anna van Zandt Bing of Nagasaki, Japan.  The instrument is a "Koto". Fanciful recipes for Shirred Eggs, Scalloped Oysters and Snow Pudding. Ads for the Harris Shoe, Wm. Knabe & Co. Pianos, Ivers & Pond Pianos. 34 pp. 20 x 27 cm. Opera Glass, The, Boston, March, 1897 Boston, MA: The Opera Glass Publishing Co. Cover photo of E.H. Sothern, the star in "An Enemy to the King."  His life story includes adventure in Galveston, Texas in 1880 when, in need of costume for a barbarian part, he bought some half-tanned skins and had them sewn.  The smell was very "barbarian."  Excellent cartoons illustrate "Some West-End Theatres" with rather daring pictures of female performers.  Article remarks about male visitors from staid New England villages who really "get sporty" enjoying the burlesque girls. Ad for a novel entertainment for Lodges, Churches, Receptions, etc.: Edison's Phonograph. 16 pp. 15 x 23 cm. Paper booklet, very good. (6757) $15.00. Printed Matter.
Republic of Iraq Postage Stamps: Souvenir Sheet of Freedom from Hunger Campaign 21-2-1963	 1963 Baghdad, Iraq: Republic of Iraq. Souvenir sheet contains three Iraqi postage stamps of 10, 3 and 20 fils denominations commemorating Freedom From Hunger Campaign of March 21, 1963. Sheet is postmarked 3-21-63 and addressed to Karl Struss,  Hollywood, CA. ( Struss [1886-1981]was an Oscar-winning cinematographer.)  1 sheet 17 x 12 cm. Spectator; Daily entries 1711-1714,  in Eight Volumes by Joseph Addison 1744 London, England: J. & R. Tonson in the Strand.  Addison uses his marvelous education to provide daily doses of wisdom and humor to his readers over the years 1711 to 1714, in 635 entries. Originally published daily, this 1744 version includes all 635.  Entries start with an apt quotation in Latin or Greek, followed by its translation into English, and then a refreshing discourse that is delightful after four centuries.  It gives the modern reader an interesting and entertaining picture of what Englishmen were doing and thinking in the early 18th century. The daily diary of an Englishman reproduced in Vol. IV shows how Addison uses the mundane  entries of a gentleman to teach readers a lesson. 2612 pp. 10 x 17.4 cm. Eight duodecimo volumes in calf with five-ribbed spines with gilt design. Boards are worn, and three of eight have detached front or back boards, or nearly so. (V.1 front board detached, pencil notes on front pastedown; V.2  front hinge cracked; V. 4 front hinge cracked, back cover nearly detached; V. 7 front board detached, back board cracked.)
