Mitchell was convicted by Court Martial of derogatory remarks about the War and Navy Departments.  Mitchell will receive $297.66 per month, or half pay, as an army officer with 28 years' service. Between Wind and Water by Gerald Warner Brace, with illustrations by the Author, First Edition, with clippings about author and book review inserted.  1966 New York, NY: W.W. Norton & Co., Inc. Gerald Brace draws upon more than 50 summers of islanding, sailing and fog to write this book about the Maine coastal waters. He quotes Sarah Orne Jewett, a Maine writer, to introduce his chapters on the Maine Coast Accent and "Summer Folk". He quotes Captain John Smith to write about "Boats".  Included in the pages are a 1966 review of this book from the Christian Science Monitor, by Philip Booth, and  a 1968 Boston Herald Traveler review by Wilma Ebbitt of another of Brace's books. 220 pp. 14.7 x 21.7 cm. Bluejacket's Manual, United States Navy, 1940, Tenth Edition 1940 Annapolis, MD: United States Naval Institute. 791 pp. 13 x 19 cm. When sailors joined the U.S. Navy in 1940, this is the book they studied,  The kept it close to their heart in boot camp, and it went in their seabag when they went aboard ship. British Warships; The Royal Navy, Completely Illustrated and Described, Published by the Illustrated London News ca. 1940 London, England: Illustrated London News, 32-34 St. Bride St., EC4. Magnificent collection of drawings and photographs of Royal Navy warships as of middle of 1940, updated from Brassey's Naval Annual, 1940 with losses off Narvik, Dunkirk, Flanders, in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. Drawings and data for HMS King George V, new 35,000 ton battleships; new "Lion" class of 40,000 ton ships; "Nelson" class including HMS Rodney. Caption for HMS Nelson notes that she ran over a magnetic mine, but survived it. Includes cutaway drawings of battleships, and other ships. Photo of HMS Warspite, flagship at Narvik. Battle cruiser HMS Hood, 42,100 tons. "...if it had been the Admiral Graf Spee's fortune to have been caught by the "Hood"..what short shrift she would have received." [Graf Spee fought with HMS Exeter, Achilles and Ajax in action in December 1939 off the River Plate in Argentina, and subsequently was scuttled by her captain.] HMS Repulse and Carriers HMS Ark Royal and Illustrious, Victorious, Formidable, Furious, Eagle, Glorious. Hudson-Fulton Celebration, Official Program, September 25 to October 9, 1909 New York, NY: Hudson-Fulton Celebration Commission. Celebration commemorates Discovery of Hudson River by Henry Hudson, 1609 and Inauguration of Steam Navigation by Robert Fulton, 1807. List of officers and Chairmen of Committees. Events included naval parades, musical festivals, military parade, children's festivals, illuminations, lectures, carnivals, historical parades and religious observances. Pictures of floats in historical pageant. United States ships at event included USS Idaho, USS Mississippi, USS Minnesota, USS Georgia, USS Wisconsin, USS Ohio, USS Rhode Island, USS Connecticut, all part of Great White Fleet; USNLS Utrecht of Netherlands; FNS Justice of France; HMS Duke of Edinburgh and HMS Drake, UK; Viktoria Luise of Germany. Jane's Fighting Ships, 1942 [Issued June 1943] Founded in 1897 by Fred T. Jane, 46th Year of Issue 1943McMurtrie, Francis E., A.I.N.A., Editor. New York, NY: The MacMillan Co.  Forward to this book notes the tremendous difficulty of preparing this edition, with secrecy on part of combatants and neutrals, efforts to obscure or propagandize, and ships being sunk daily. Frontispiece photo of HMS Exeter, Royal Navy cruiser that bore the brunt of action with the German "pocket battleship" Admiral Graf Spee at the Battle of the Plate on December 13, 1939. Text notes that, while the Graf Spee was scuttled, Exeter was completely refitted and returned to combat. She was sunk by Japanese air attack at the Battle of the Java Sea in 1942. This fascinating real-timre record of naval action in World War II shows the ships that survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (Dec. 7th, 1941), even noting changes to them as result of repairs after the attack. Also with 62 pages of advertising for everything you need to outfit a warship. 582 pp. + 62 pp. adv. 31 x 20 cm. Light blue cloth on board with gilt lettering. Bates, who was United States Commissioner of Navigation, makes the case for a strong merchant marine, with good, well-built American ships. The ocean ship is the arm of empire, an object of life and beauty. Nations that take and keep the sea develop military, as well as civil, prowess. Author gets quite emotional about "what a selfish, short-sighted, disparaging ridiculous suggestion.. To quit building ships ourselves, and buy from Great Britain!" 12 pp. 15 x 23 cm.
