Author of Dictionary James Hardie provides Preface to Second Edition and introduces Latin Scholar who has written "Illustrious Men of Rome, from Romulus to Augustus". Illustrious men include Numa Pompilius, Tullus Hostilius, Ancus Marcius, Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, Servius Tullus, Tarquinius Superbus, Junius Brutus, Haratius Cocles, Mucius Scoevola, Cloelia Virgo,Caeus Pompeius Magnus, Marcus Tullius Cicero, more. 309 pp. 9.5 x 14.5 cm. Watchman and Reflector, Boston, Thursday, October 18, 1870 Boston, MA: Watchman and Reflector. Boston Protestant newspaper. Mr. Beecher on spitting.  Very descriptive article describes habit of "gents" to spit everywhere, as they chew tobacco and as they smoke.  Siege of Paris, discussion of present state of events in France, with 800,000 or more German soldiers on French soil.  Commentary on "drunkardness" in England.  G.B.S. writes from Liverpool about "men and women reeling  under the effects of excessive drinking, their faces inhuman in expression. Some were too drunk for words. Some were fairly frothing at the mouth.....it is a rare thing (in America) to see women in this condition.... but here in England you are constantly meeting women who carry in their faces the marks of this fearful degradation, and you frequently see women who are disgustingly drunk."  Situation in Alabama where there is so much lawlessness that President Grant has felt it to be his duty to convert her into a special military district. 8 pp. 42 x 64 cm. Watchman and Reflector, Boston, Thursday, February 2, 1871 Boston, MA: Watchman and Reflector. Boston Protestant newspaper. Discussion on Baptism Before Communion.  Reports from various New England Protestant churches.  Methodist Episcopal Church has recently opened a college in Lucknow, Northern India. The Foot and Mouth Disease: danger of taking milk unboiled from diseased cows. Dr. Thorne of England says large quantities of the flesh of diseased cows has been sold at market with no unfavorable consequence. This issue features long page one article, "Methods of Ministerial Culture" by Rev. Wayland Hoyt, Paper No. 1.   "A Note or Two From the South" by Rev. D.M. Reeves. The deepest and most universal depression is every where prevalent. A certain negro summed up the situation of his race quite graphically..."Ah, boss! we's gnawin' a drier bone, wid less meat on it than we ever gnawed afore." This issue features long page one article, "Methods of Ministerial Culture" by Rev. Wayland Hoyt, Paper No. 2 (of two).   Christian Card-Playing: Story of how a missionary approaches seamen in a sailor boarding house in New York, and leads them from sin and toward prayer.  Commentary by T.M.M. of Kingston, Mass.  about British "Some Plain Words to Americans"  pointedly illuminates British "neutrality" during the Civil War, as they aided Jeff Davis' army, and bribes by the British government to Romish priests in Canada. "A New Phase of Secession" by Rev. William Crowell, D.D. discusses abrogation by Russia of tripartite treaty that followed end of Crimean War.	8 pp. 42 x 64 cm. Newspaper, uncut, very good. Watchman and Reflector, Boston, Thursday, June 12, 1873  Boston, MA: Watchman and Reflector. Boston Protestant newspaper.  Feature article is "Aggression in Foreign Missions the Demand of the Hour" by Rev. C.H. Carpenter, Missionary to Burmah, in address delivered at the recent Anniversary of the Missionary Union in Albany.  Speaker likens missionary effort to a steamer with coal and turns of the propeller, suggesting that little increase has been made since 1853, but at same time he notes many gains in gaining souls amongst the heathen of Asia and elsewhere. Carpenter details needs in upper reaches of the Irrawaddy, and a Mohammedan rebellion in Yunnan."The Sanitary Commission" by Rev. J.C. Stockbridge, D.D. relates a Civil Wartime story about taking a steamer crammed with sanitary stores to Belle Plaine, near Fredericksburg, VA to aid all the wounded soldiers there.  "Nebraskiana" by Prof. J.D. Butler tells about a Nebraska coal mine, then writes about modern Lincoln, Nebraska.  Story about Thaddeus Stevens of Vermont, whose will left money to his nephew, if he abstained from intoxicating beverages for three five-year periods; the nephew didn't, and the money went to found an orphanage. 8 pp. 42 x 64 cm. Watchman and Reflector, Boston, Thursday, August 28, 1873  Boston, MA: Watchman and Reflector. Boston Protestant newspaper.  "Down the Coast of Maine" by Margaret Mason tells of a trip first by rail to Boston, then aboard a paddle wheel steamer Down East to Eastport, Maine. Commentary on Mormons in Salt Lake City and their Polygamy. "How they collect ice in India" relates complicated process and work by thousands to gather ice.  "Spiritualism and Lust" --"So unbridled lust is the upshot of Mormonism. So Spiritualism is rushing the same vile way. At the meeting lately held by the Spiritualists in Vineland, N.J. the notorious Victoria Woodhull delivered the great speech of the occasion.... the speech was characterized by almost revolting coarseness... she calmly advocated the abolition of marriage..."  W. Lamson reports on "A Day at Asbury Campground, Hamilton, Mass."  --- he tells about huge crush of people boarding trains from Salem, on to Beverly and North Beverly.... five or six thousand at the campground....sermon by Bishop Haven... more Methodists arrive with each train.... light rain..... “Lord brings it, He will dry you off...." 8 pp. 42 x 64 cm.
