Text Box: Japan: Things Japanese, being Notes on Various Subjects Connected with Japan for the Use of Travellers and Others, Fifth Edition, Revised by Chamberlain, Basil Hall 1905 London, England: John Murray, Albemarle Street. Author was Emeritus Professor of Japanese and Philology in Tokyo Imperial University, who came to Japan in 1873.  In this edition he notes that naval war with Russia is presently under way. He notes that educated Japanese are swiftly putting old customs and traditions into the background as they modernize. However, he finds much that is unique about Japan to explain, and provides an excellent fold-out map of the country.  "English as she is Japped" illustrates unique translations, like "Hand Panting Post Cards"; "Extract of Fowl", over an egg shop; "Pest Milk"; "The European monkey jacket make for the Japanese"; and "Head Cutter" over a barber's shop. Ad for Fuji Beer notes "the flavour is so sweet and simple that not much injure for much drink." Memories of the Russian Court, First Edition, Reprinted, November 1923  by Viroubova, Anna 1923 New York, NY: The MacMillan Co. "It is with a prayerful heart and memories deep and reverent that I begin to write the story of my long and intimate friendship with Alexandra Feodorovna, wife of Nicholas II….and of the tragedy of the Revolution which brought on her and hers such undeserved misery, and on our unhappy country such a black night of oblivion."  The author tells of life at court in St. Petersburg, and Peterhof, Tsarskoe Selo, Livadia and elsewhere; how the Emperor whistled for the Empress, the children, and for Viroubova. Book contains many excellent photos of the Imperial family, including several aboard the Imperial Yacht Standert.  Photos of letters from Nicholas II and his children to the author are particularly poignant. One of the last letters from the Empress was written in Old Slavonic.  400 pp. 14 x 20.6 cm. Brick red decorated cloth on board, very clean and fresh. Plate showing letters in Old Slavonic is loose. Owner bookplate (William C. Bowlen, Dec. 1923) on front endpaper. No dustjacket. Very good. McFingal: An Epic Poem with Introduction and notes by Benson J. Lossing, LL.D. by John Trumbull 1881 New York, NY: American Book Exchange.   Introduction notes that the first part (2 cantos) of Trumbull's poem appeared in 1776, intended to poke fun at the invading British forces and Tory Americans in the American Colonies.  It was alo published in Britain, where some enjoyed the satire and humor, but it was especially enjoyed in America, and noted as an excellent example of early political humor. McFingal was a Tory official who ended up getting the wrong end of public sentiment.  He published the final two cantos (four in all) in 1781. Trumbull was born in Waterford, CT in 1750 and died in Detroit in 1831. 322 pp. 13 x 17 cm. Green cloth on board, elaborately decorated in black and gilt. Minor rubbing, very good. (5437) $29.00. W Oczach Dzieci: 10 lat Polski Ludowej w rysunkach dzieciecych [Through the Eyes of Children: 10 Years of the Polish People] In Polish. Zagala, Boleslaw; Jackiewiczowa, Elzbieta 1954 Warszawa, Poland: Nasza Ksiegarnia Warszawa.  Collection of delightful, full-color drawings by children during the years of World War II when Nazis occupied the country. Drawings include one labeled Wysadzenie pociagu niemieckiego przez partizantow polskich [Polish partisans blowing up German train], by Andrzej Wolniewicz, 13. Ewa Mehl, 7 draws a picture "Daddy Takes a Walk" shows prisoners in a concentration camp. Janina Piekarska, 14, drew a picture of Nazi soldiers arresting Polish people, all shown kneeling.  The children captured the terror and cruelty, and the heroism of liberators, and then rebuilding the country after the war. This copy has mimeographed summary in English pasted in front of book, and translation of titles of drawings pasted in back of book. ~85 pp. 28 x 20.6 cm. Greenfield (Mass.) Gazette & Franklin Herald, Greenfield, Mass., Tuesday, June 2, 1835 Phelps, A., Editor	1835	Greenfield, MA: Phelps & Ingersoll. From the Baltimore Patriot: Lengthy discourse on "The Van Buren Convention", full of strife, bickering and ill-feeling.  New York delegates unprincipled; Virginians were laughed at, derided and insulted; The New York delegation found the New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maine Jacksonism so pliable that it could be moulded as New York pleased. The prospect of the Whigs is now a glorious one.... [Note: Van Buren was president, 1837-1841.] Washing Sheep. Many seem to think that they more dirt they can sell with the wool the more gain. Editorial on The Baltimore Convention: No one  off the packed assemblage dared to vote contrary to the known will of Gen. Jackson (who was then President).   Great Meeting at Faneuil Hall: A series of resolutions, approving of the nomination of Daniel Webster for the presidency.  Mr. Clayton has recovered the balloon which left him dangling on a house top in his last attempted ascension.  It was found on the bank of the Licking river, about 15 miles from Cincinnati.  A trial of a locomotive engine was made on the Lowell Rail Road.  A number of gentlemen made the passage from Boston to Lowell in an hour and fifteen minutes. 4 pp. 40 x 54 cm. Report on The Democratic Festival in Boston:  On Thursday, 9th February the Council, Senators and Representatives formed in procession at the Doric Hall of the State House, under the direction of Col. Peter Dunbar, Chief Marshal, and, preceded by a brass band, marched from the State House to Faneuil Hall, passing through Park, Tremont, Court, State streets, and Merchants' Row, in a Grand Triumphal March.  At 6 p.m. the Governor arrived, and there was a grand feast, but without any spiritous or fermented beverages.  List of all the toasts, including several that twisted the tail of Federalists, or Whigs. Discussion on the Oregon bill in Congress at Washington. Death of Isaac Hull at Philadelphia.
