Author, Dr. Hart (1854-1943) in 1909 was instrumental in getting his student, W.E.B. Du Bois, to deliver a paper on Reconstruction before the American Historical Association in New York. He later protected right of African-American students to enter Harvard after WWI. Set of 14 maps which describe United States of America from North America in 1650 to Post-Civil War USA in 1891.  One map shows territorial growth from 1783 to 1866; another shows status of slavery in U.S. 1775-1865; Map shows territorial controversies settled by U.S. 1840-1850; Also U.S. Mar. 4, 1801; Mar. 4, 1825; Mar. 4, 1855; July 4, 1861; and Mar. 4th 1891. Maps are printed in color. ~15 pp. 24 x 18 cm. Floral Gift, The, From Nature and the Heart Chauncey, Mary, Editor 1846 Worcester, MA: Jonathan Grout, Jr. This is a delightful little book, probably first edition but since several differing editions appeared in 1846, it is unclear.  This book tells the language of flowers, which "betray, like the divining rods of magi old, where priceless wealth lies buried, not of gold, But love, strong love, that never can decay!" Poems about many flowers and the words they convey, including Acacia (Chaste Love), Aloe (Sorrow, Dejection), Amoranth (Immortality), American Linden (Matrimony), Aspen (Lamentation), Buttercup (Childishness), Bachelor's Button (Hope and Love), Damask Rose (Bashful Love), over 110 more. 128 pp. 7.4 x 11.4 cm. Heavenly Footman, The: Or, A Description of the Man That Gets to Heaven: With Directions How to Run So As to Obtain, by John Bunyan 1851 Philadelphia, PA: American Baptist Publication Society. This 1851 Edition begins with Author's Epistle to all Slothful and Careless People. Bunyan (1628-1688) was a dedicated Christian whom the Baptists in the 19th century claimed as their own.  This little book was first published ten years after Bunyan's death, in 1698. Frontispiece, "So Run That Ye May Obtain."	95 pp. + adv. 9.5 x 14.9 cm. Receipts from churches for year totaled $12,525. Mrs. Eleanor M. Roulston, Missionary reports that her missionaries have had a chance to smile in ten languages. Photo of English and German sailor boys playing "Boston Baked Beans" at the Sailor's Rest. Talk about Rev. Stedman W. Hanks, corresponding secretary 1852-1889 and his prowess as a Temperance lecturer. Includes illustration of "Black Valley Railroad", a temperance poster. Clubwoman's Diary, 1953  Boston, MA: ephemera. This lady is the ultimate clubwoman-- her diary is a list of meetings of VFW Auxiliary, Navy Mothers, Church groups, A.U.W.(Ass'n of Univ. Women?), Republicans, Parent Teachers, Scouts, and more.  Son Don is off to the Navy, and is sailing from Boston, to Able Station, Greenland, other spots. Vacation at Skowhegan. Rosanna; or Scenes in Boston by the Author of "Three Experiments in Living", etc. First Edition by Hannah Farnham Sawyer Lee, 1839 Cambridge, MA: John Owen. Author Hannah Farnham Sawyer Lee (1780-1865) wrote her first book at age 52, and obtained a fine reputation as a writer of books to guide children morally.  In this book, Rosanna McCarty is a young Irish immigrant woman in Boston, and she fits the stereotype of the time:  Poor, Catholic, and intemperate.  Lee's use of Irish accent and her description of life among these poor folks is colorful and sometimes funny.  This book has been reproduced very frequently, but first edition copies are quite scarce. 134 pp. 11 x 17 cm. Brown cloth on board with blindstamped design and gilt title, cover very good, text block soiled at endpapers and foxed. Owner's name  "Elizabeth Pettee" written in pencil on front free endpaper. France, Our Ally: A Brief Account of France, Its People, and Their Part in the War, with special Information for American Soldiers [WITH an American Soldier's mementos included.] by Van Vorst, B. 1918	New York, NY: National War Work Council of YMCA. This is a rich little World War I piece that belonged to Pvt. Thomas Salzillo of Providence, RI, Co. H, 114th Infantry, 29th Division. He has listed what must be the names of his platoon, and in the book are two clippings about the 29th Division in France. One notes that the 114th fought in Haute-Alsace and Meuse-Argonne. Also two tramway tickets and a watchmaker's business card from Bordeaux. Little book explains French customs, currency, urges courtesy, explains French bargaining, and provides a map of France.   44 pp. 9.8 x 15.3 cm. Army Song Book, U.S.--For free distribution to all Officers and Men in the Army [with World War I Soldier's inscription, giving book to his sister.] 1918 Washington, DC: War Department Commission on Training Camp Activities. World War I Song Book, includes Star-Spangled Banner, America, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean, Over There, K-K-K-Katy, The Garibaldi Hymn, La Brabançonne, more. Combat History of the Super Sixth: Sixth Armored Division in the European Theatre of Operations 18 July 1944 -- 8 May 1945, containing 103 photographs with statement by Commanding General, Major General Robert W. Grow, US Army. Compiled by William E. Rutledge, Jr.   ca. 1947. Yadkinville, NC: Ripple Publishing Co.  Original post World War II History of the Sixth Armored Division under Major General Robert W. Grow. This unofficial history, prepared by members of Division G2 and G3, traces formation of division at Fort Knox in 1942 to embarkation for Europe, then landing at Normandy and fighting across Brittany (18 July to 17 Sept., 1944) , then Seille River campaign (17 Sept. to 7 Nov. 1944), then Saar Campaign (8 Nov. to 24 Dec. 1944), Ardennes Campaign (25 Dec. 1944 to 26 Jan. 1945), Dasburg-Prum River Campaign (27 Jan. to 8 Mar. 1945) and finally the Germany Campaign (10 Mar. to 16 Apr. 1945.  Division took part in liberation of 3000 prisoners at notorious Navy concentration camp at Buchenwald.  Action ceased at 090001 May 1945 with unconditional surrender of German High Command. Photo of Commanding General with General George S. Patton, Commander Third Army. Colored maps, black and white photos, many detailed notes and statistics of Division. This History was out of print for 25 years, and recently it has been published anew.  This is original, post-war edition. . 176 pp. 21.7 x 28.2 cm. For the American about to embark on an ocean liner for a trip to Europe in the 1920s, this little book offered a little flavor of the various countries, what to do at sea, nautical vocabulary, time differences, distances in Europe, and space for listing gifts, planning itineraries, and poetry and short pieces of prose about European countries.  . 157 pp. 11.5 x 18.2 cm.
