HISTORY
Activated (designation at the time unknown) Jul 43. USAF Installation Directories from 1950 call it Lookout Mountain Lab, and give an address of 8935 Wonderland Avenue, Los Angeles. Officially designated Lookout Mountain Laboratory on 15 Feb 56, by DAF special order 9. Redesignated Lookout Mountain Air Force Station on 1 Apr 58, under MATS, by DAF special order 15. At some point in time it was under MAC and home to a unit of the Air Photo and Charting Service. Inactivated, and assigned as an off-base installation to Norton AFB, on 30 Jun 69 by DAF special order GA-45. Disposed of on 19 Jan 70. USAF Permanent Installation Number was 1019, Installation Location Code was NQUH. (S. Murdock)
The 3/2/98 edition of People Magazine had an article titled "Blasts From the Past: After 50 years the men of Lookout Mountain talk of their secret mission." In 1982 a movie called "Wavelength," circa 1982, was filmed using LMAFS as a set. the "B" sci-fi movie was about a secretly reactivated base, alien experiments, etc.
The Air Force made several films about Lookout Mountain and it's key role in making DoD films. In 1999 VCE, Inc made a film "The Atomic Filmmakers" about Lookout Mountain and the people who worked there.
